In January we found out that Redditch was upgrading a load of council houses by exterior insulating them – applying insulation to the outside of the house and then re-rendering and re-painting. Luckily, even though we aren’t in a council house, we were being included in the upgrade.
Whilst not a “before” and “after” situation, Redditch council have a page showing a sample “before” and a different “after”
Step 1 is the scaffolding. This has happened yesterday and today. The scaffolding guys have been great. We’ve had concerns about security because of the dogs and they’ve confirmed they will make things secure each evening
Step 2 will be moving the outside garden tap tomorrow morning. The plumber is extending the pipe (somehow) so that it is extended by about 70mm to cater for the extra thickness of the walls.
Step 3 will be the addition of pink insulation boards. These are a couple of feet square and are bolted to the existing walls from the outside.
Step 4 will be the rendering. A concrete skim coat goes over the pink insulation and is allowed to dry for a few days and then finally
Step 5 is the application of a silicone based final coat in a yellowey daffodilly kind of colour
This will result in a much better external render than we have on the current house, an extra inch and a half of insulation for energy efficiency and a complete repaint of the house. Thats gotta be a couple of grand of benefit, even before the cost of the insulation, provided by Redditch council, so THANK YOU.
