The price of drugs…

No…not those type of drugs.

People who know me know of my health issues. When I was around 16 I started taking omeprazole – a so called proton pump inhibitor. .. basically helps to cut down gastric acid in the stomach.  Around the age of 19 I started having magnesium deficiency and by 25 I had a central line – a tube in my chest going into the main vein in the heart. I now connect to the drip every other day. Because of the tube I’ve had two blood clots in the lung so I also take anti blood clot tablets.

Recent research from the US FDA has linked omeprazole and similar drugs to magnesium deficiency.  Now the plan is to tail off my omeprazole.   This hasn’t been discussed with the docs yet but I’ve had a thought. If, without omeprazole my magnesium is OK I might be able to cut back or stop the magnesium infusions over time. This might result in the line coming out eventually.  This would mean I could stop the blood clot tablets and the regular blood tests. All this…potentially. .. because of a drug I started taking 24 years ago.

Utopia never happens.
