My first ever proper computer was an Amstrad PC1512DDMM (512K of RAM, 2 x 1.2MB 5.25″ floppy disk drives and a Monochrome monitor – no hard drive)
When I started work, part of my first pay packet went towards buying a 32MB external hard drive for around £250 – around £7.80 per megabyte – it was like having 25 floppy disks permanently loaded and was amazing !!!
After recently having problems with my PC I figured now was a good time to “wipe and re-install” and rather than reinstalling Vista, I figured I’d go with the new Windows 7 but because the current hard drive had my data on (and was quite full) I figured it was easier to buy a new hard drive, install Windows 7 on it and then transfer the data over so I went looking for a replacement.
The current drive was a 70gig and was bought as part of the machine 2.5 years ago. I was dumfounded yesterday to buy a 1 terabyte drive for a mere £46 +VAT – thats 0.005 pence per megabyte (4.6p per gigabyte) – 156,000 times cheaper than 23 years ago. Who’d a thunk it !
